How Does a Temperature Gauge Work?
A temperature gauge works on the principle of thermal expansion, where temperature changes cause a bimetal strip or gas to expand, moving a needle across a calibrated dial:
- Heat Transfer: The stem of the gauge absorbs heat from the medium being measured.
- Bimetal Expansion: Inside the stem, a bimetal strip (two metals bonded together) expands at different rates when heated.
- Coil Movement: This differential expansion causes the bimetal coil to rotate.
- Reading Display: The rotation is transferred to the pointer, which moves across the graduated dial to indicate the temperature.
In gas-filled gauges, temperature changes cause gas pressure to vary, which moves the pointer through a Bourdon tube mechanism. These are preferred for high-vibration environments.
